  • 1 small apple peeled and diced (optional)
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon

  • 1/2 cup salted caramel sauce plus more for serving
  • 1 box yellow cake mix 15.25 oz (dry)
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter thinly sliced (1 stick)
  • 1/4 teaspoon flaky sea salt plus more to finish
  • 1/2 cup chopped pecans or walnuts optional

  • 1 scoop vanilla ice cream optional

Preparation
  1. Grease the slow cooker with nonstick cooking spray or a light layer of butter. Preheat the crockpot on HIGH for about 15 minutes.
  2. Pour the apple pie filling into the crockpot and add diced apple, vanilla extract, and ground cinnamon. Stir gently to combine.
  3. Drizzle salted caramel sauce over the apple mixture, ensuring it is evenly distributed.
  4. Sprinkle dry yellow cake mix evenly over the apple and caramel layers without stirring.
  5. Lay thin slices of unsalted butter on top. If using, sprinkle chopped nuts on top.
  6. Place a tea towel under the lid before covering to prevent condensation. Cook on HIGH for 2 to 2.5 hours or LOW for 3.5 to 4.5 hours until bubbly and set.
  7. Let the cake stand for about 10 minutes before serving. Sprinkle with flaky sea salt and extra caramel sauce before serving.
  8. Serve warm, optionally with a scoop of vanilla ice cream.
