Ingredients

For the Picadillo
  • 1 pound Ground Beef can be swapped for ground turkey
  • 1 Onion chopped
  • 1 Bell Pepper finely diced
  • 4 Garlic Cloves minced
  • 1 cup Tomato Sauce or crushed tomatoes
  • ½ cup Olives green or black
  • ¼ cup Raisins optional
  • 1 teaspoon Cumin
  • 1 teaspoon Oregano
  • 1 Bay Leaf optional

Equipment

  • large skillet
  • Spatula

Method

Cooking Steps
  1. In a large skillet, heat 2 tablespoons of olive oil over medium heat. Add ground beef, breaking it apart as it cooks for 5-7 minutes until browned.
  2. Stir in chopped onion and diced bell pepper, cooking for 5 minutes until onions are translucent and peppers soften.
  3. Add minced garlic and sauté for 1 minute until fragrant.
  4. Pour in tomato sauce, then add olives, raisins, cumin, oregano, and bay leaf. Mix thoroughly.
  5. Reduce heat to low, cover skillet, and let it simmer for 30 minutes.
  6. Taste and season with salt and pepper. If sauce thickens too much, add a splash of water.
  7. Serve warm over rice or with black beans, garnished with fresh cilantro if desired.

Notes

Allow flavors to meld by making this dish a day in advance. Simmering longer deepens the flavor.
