- Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
- Melt 3 tablespoons of unsalted butter in a large skillet over medium heat, then add sliced sweet onions and sauté for 10 to 15 minutes until soft and translucent.
- In a mixing bowl, combine 1 cup of sour cream, 2 cups of shredded sharp cheddar cheese, 1 teaspoon of salt, ½ teaspoon of black pepper, 1 teaspoon of garlic powder, and 1 teaspoon of onion powder, mixing well.
- Gently fold the sautéed onions into your creamy mixture until well coated.
- Crush the buttery round crackers and mix them with 3 tablespoons of melted butter, reserving some for topping.
- Grease a 9x13-inch baking dish and pour the onion-cheese mixture into it, spreading evenly.
- Sprinkle the reserved cracker mixture over the top of the casserole.
- Bake in the preheated oven for 30 to 35 minutes until the top is golden brown and bubbly.
